Recall the term, then apply it

Open a question to reveal its answer. If the answer surprises you, read the matching lesson and try to explain a new example. These sample decks are a review aid; they do not cover every topic or reproduce the appโ€™s spaced-repetition scheduling.

When the definitions feel familiar, practice applying them in the full course, where questions put each distinction into a policy, claim, or client situation. The cards cover general life and health knowledge only; your state exam also tests your state's insurance laws and rules.

Shared Foundations

6 cards

Recall the risk, contract, application, and underwriting terms that both lines share.

CARD 01 What is adverse selection in insurance?

People expecting higher losses may be more motivated to seek coverage. This can leave an insurer with more claims than it anticipated.

CARD 02 What does offer and acceptance describe in an insurance contract?

One party proposes terms and the other agrees to the offered contract. A valid contract requires a legally effective offer and acceptance; an application alone is not always acceptance by the insurer.

CARD 03 Why is an insurance contract called aleatory?

The values exchanged may be unequal. A small premium may support a much larger covered benefit after a loss.

CARD 04 An applicant notices that the application lists the wrong medication. What should happen before signing?

Correct the answer with the applicant's confirmation. The application should accurately reflect the applicant's information before it is submitted.

CARD 05 An applicant leaves a required medical-history answer blank. What should the producer do?

Ask the applicant to complete it accurately. Do not invent an answer to speed submission.

CARD 06 Whose handling of protected health information is governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule?

Covered entities and their business associates. Whether the rule applies depends on the party, record, and activity.

Life Insurance

8 cards

Recall one key distinction from each life insurance and annuity unit.

CARD 01 An insured wants to keep eligible term coverage after the initial period without a new medical exam. Which feature matters?

Renewability. A renewable term provision permits continuation under stated terms, commonly with higher renewal premiums.

CARD 02 Parents want a benefit for heirs after both parents have died. Which two-life design matches that timing?

Survivorship, or second-to-die, coverage. It pays after the second insured death.

CARD 03 How does a referenced market index affect interest credited to an indexed universal life policy?

Through the policy's index-linked crediting formula. The owner does not directly own the index's securities. Caps, participation rates, and other contract terms affect the credited amount.

CARD 04 A variable universal-life account starts with $1,000. An $80 premium is fully credited, then $120 of charges is deducted. With no other changes, how much additional deposit would restore the account to $1,000?

$40. The account becomes $1,000 + $80 โˆ’ $120 = $960. A $40 deposit restores the stated target; it does not guarantee future coverage.

CARD 05 How does a cash-value withdrawal differ from a policy loan?

A withdrawal removes value rather than borrowing against it. It can reduce benefits and may have tax consequences.

CARD 06 An insured uses a life policy's long-term-care rider for qualifying care. What should be checked about the later death benefit?

Whether the care benefit reduces the remaining death proceeds. The rider's benefit structure and limits determine the effect.

CARD 07 A buyer has $60,000 in accessible savings and plans to commit $50,000 to an annuity payout with no later lump-sum access. They want $20,000 to remain accessible outside the annuity. What reserve shortfall would that commitment create?

$10,000. The commitment leaves $60,000 โˆ’ $50,000 = $10,000 accessible. That is $10,000 below the desired $20,000 reserve.

CARD 08 An employee contributes to group life premiums. What does that payment prove about a spouse's eligibility for dependent life coverage?

Nothing by itself. Contributory describes employee premium funding; the plan's dependent-eligibility terms separately decide whether the spouse can be covered.

Accident & Health Insurance

10 cards

Recall one key distinction from each accident and health unit.

CARD 01 A plan has a $5,000 annual out-of-pocket maximum. A member has already paid $4,700 that counts toward it. Their next covered in-network claim would normally require $800 of counted cost sharing. How much of that $800 remains the member's responsibility?

$300. Only $5,000 โˆ’ $4,700 remains before the maximum is reached. Under these stated terms, the plan pays the other $500 of this claim's otherwise-counted cost sharing. Premiums and excluded expenses remain separate.

CARD 02 How does subrogation differ from coordination of benefits?

Subrogation seeks recovery from a responsible third party; coordination orders benefits between health plans. They address different payment relationships.

CARD 03 A claimant considers suing after a health claim dispute. Which provision governs the contract's conditions for legal action?

Legal-actions provision. Legal-actions language addresses when suit may be brought after proof and under applicable law.

CARD 04 What does partial disability generally mean in a work-capacity definition?

Some work capacity remains, but duties or hours are reduced. The policy may also require proof of income loss.

CARD 05 After a worker files a workers' compensation claim, what private-policy terms still determine whether disability coverage also pays?

Occupational coverage, offsets, exclusions, and claim conditions. Filing the workers' compensation claim alone does not decide the private policy's benefit.

CARD 06 A former employee expects continuation coverage to cost only their old payroll deduction. What cost change should be explained?

They may have to pay the full group premium plus an allowed administrative amount. The employer's earlier contribution need not continue.

CARD 07 An employer contributes to a worker's health savings account (HSA). Who owns that contribution once it is in the account?

The worker who owns the account. Employer contributions do not make the employer the owner of the health savings account.

CARD 08 Two insurers sell the same standardized Medigap plan letter. Which terms remain available for comparison?

Premiums, availability, and insurer-specific terms outside the standardized basic benefits. The same plan letter does not require identical prices.

CARD 09 Why can Medicaid eligibility details differ between two states?

States administer their programs within federal requirements. Medicaid has shared federal and state funding, with state choices that can affect eligibility and benefits.

CARD 10 A care plan requires licensed clinical treatment rather than only help dressing or eating. Which care category should be examined?

Skilled care. Personal assistance alone is generally described as custodial care.
