The Series 57 is the qualification exam for a Securities Trader Representative. It covers trading activities and the operational responsibilities behind a trade. Your firm’s compliance team should confirm how the registration applies to your role.
The official exam has 50 scored questions and five unscored questions, with 105 minutes to finish. Firm sponsorship and the SIE corequisite apply. The exam fee is $105, separate from course access.
See FINRA’s Series 57 page, the official content outline, and current exam fees. Our license requirements guide explains the registration steps. For help planning your preparation, read our pass rate and difficulty guide and free study materials and study plan.
Read a lesson and explain its rule in your own words. Then answer questions that change the order type, market, or customer instructions. Review why each alternative fails, including when you guessed correctly.
The full course contains 3,800+ practice questions and 5,800+ flashcards. Use the study guide to plan your sequence, podcasts to revisit course units, and the public practice test to identify gaps. The public samples are fixed sets; repeated scores can reflect answer memory.

definitionsWhat is the Series 57 exam?
The Series 57 is FINRA’s Securities Trader Representative exam. It tests trading activities and the records, reporting, clearance, and settlement work that supports them. Your sponsoring firm should confirm the registration required for your specific role.
Is CertFuel Series 57 prep free?
The Series 57 course is currently available in Free Beta, including lessons, practice questions, and flashcards. There is no published beta expiration date, and Free Beta is not a promise of permanent free access. The public practice test, flashcards, and cheat sheet require no account.
Do I need sponsorship and the SIE?
Yes. Taking the Series 57 requires association with and sponsorship by a FINRA member firm or another applicable SRO member firm. The SIE is a corequisite for the registration. Taking a prep course does not require sponsorship, and passing the exams alone does not authorize independent securities business.
How many questions are on the Series 57?
The exam presents 55 multiple-choice questions: 50 scored questions and five unidentified, unscored pretest questions. You have 105 minutes. FINRA allocates 41 scored questions to trading activities and nine to books and records, trade reporting, clearance, and settlement.
What does the Series 57 exam cost?
FINRA lists a $105 exam fee. That exam fee is separate from CertFuel course access and the SIE exam fee. Check the current FINRA fee schedule and ask your firm which costs it covers.
Where should I start studying?
Start with general trading practices, then study product-specific rules and customer orders. These three course chapters belong to Trading Activities, which makes up 82% of scored questions. Complete the reporting and settlement chapter too, then use practice explanations to identify what needs another pass.
