"A huge shout out to Alex for creating this and making it available. I only learned about CertFuel a few days before my exam so I jammed through it in 3 days. It's thorough and clear and really well organized. The testing features are fantastic."

I paid for Kaplan, Achievables, and study.com and this one is the best and doesn't make me feel like I am struggling to understand the material. I am also recommending to all my friends and colleagues at work!"

Start learningHow to prepare for the SIE exam
A simple 4-step study plan most candidates can finish in 2 to 4 weeks
-
Set your timeline
Plan on 50 to 100 total study hours. Full-time students often finish in 2 weeks; working professionals usually spread it across 4 to 6 weeks of evenings and weekends. Pick an exam date now to anchor the plan.
-
Work the four topic areas in order of weight
Products and Risks is 44% of the exam, Trading and Customer Accounts is 31%, Capital Markets is 16%, and the Regulatory Framework is 9%. Spend study time roughly in those proportions instead of front-to-back.
-
Practice questions every day
The SIE rewards pattern recognition. Aim for at least 50 practice questions per day, review every miss, and let an adaptive engine resurface the topics you keep getting wrong. Flashcards are great for the rule-heavy areas (T+1 settlement, account types, trade reporting).
-
Take a full-length practice exam before scheduling
Don't book the real test until you're scoring 75%+ on a timed, full-length practice exam. CertFuel's exam-readiness score is built for exactly this: when it crosses the ready threshold, schedule with confidence.

Quick answers to the questions candidates ask most
What is the SIE exam?
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) is an introductory FINRA exam that covers basic securities industry knowledge. It's a co-requisite for all representative-level exams including the Series 6, Series 7, Series 65, and Series 66.
Do I need a sponsor to take the SIE?
No. Unlike the Series 7 or Series 6, you do not need to be sponsored by a FINRA member firm to take the SIE. Anyone 18 or older can register directly with FINRA.
What's the passing score?
You need a 70% or higher to pass. The exam has 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored experimental questions, and you have 1 hour and 45 minutes to finish.
How long does it take to prepare?
Most candidates are exam-ready in 2 to 4 weeks of consistent study. Full-time students often finish faster; working professionals spreading study across evenings and weekends usually land in that window.
What happens if I fail?
You can retake the SIE, but you must wait 30 days after the first and second attempts, and 180 days after a third attempt. The exam fee applies to each attempt.
Does the SIE expire?
Yes. SIE results are valid for four years. If you don't pass a qualifying representative-level exam within that window, you'll need to retake the SIE.
What exams come after the SIE?
The SIE pairs with a "top-off" representative exam: Series 6 for mutual fund reps, Series 7 for general securities reps, Series 65 or Series 66 for investment advisers. Most candidates pick their top-off based on the role they're targeting.
Is CertFuel actually free?
Yes, completely. No credit card, no trial, no paywalled "premium" tier. All 4,000+ practice questions, flashcards, lessons, and the exam-readiness score are free forever for the SIE.
