Series 57 addresses securities-trader responsibilities. Series 3 addresses commodities futures knowledge and regulations. They are different qualification paths, so the product you work with and your actual duties matter more than the word “trader” in a job title.
What does each exam cover?
Series 57 focuses on securities trading, including order handling, product-specific trading rules, and the reporting and settlement responsibilities behind a transaction. Series 3 covers futures markets and the regulations associated with that business.
Both can involve risk, orders, and market mechanics, but that vocabulary does not make the exams interchangeable. Trading an equity security is not the same activity as handling a commodity futures contract. Check the official Series 57 description and Series 3 description with your firm.
Are the enrollment requirements the same?
No. Series 57 requires firm sponsorship and uses the SIE as a corequisite for Securities Trader registration. You can take Series 3 without a sponsor, as NFA confirms in its proficiency-examination FAQ. The SIE is not a Series 3 corequisite. NFA’s proficiency requirements describe the separate qualification and registration framework.
The ability to enroll in an exam and the ability to conduct a regulated business are also separate questions. Confirm the applicable registration requirements before treating an exam result as authorization to start work.
How should you choose a study path?
Write down the products, customers, and activities in the proposed role. Ask your compliance or registration contact which examination applies and whether other requirements remain. A firm that operates in more than one market may need a more specific answer than “take the trading exam.”
Once the requirement is clear, start with that exam’s outline. Do not divide preparation time between two courses merely because their topics overlap. Learn the rules in the context of the product and registration you actually need.
Where can you start preparing?
Use the Series 57 hub for securities-trader lessons and public practice tools, or the Series 3 hub for the futures course. CertFuel’s Series 57 course is in Free Beta without a published end date. Series 3 has a separate free-through-December-31-2026 offer.
For Series 57, begin with the study guide and review the requirements before arranging the exam appointment.
