What does the Series 66 license allow you to do?
Verified from NASAA, last checked 2026-07-02. Quick answer below, then the full breakdown.
Paired with the Series 7, the Series 66 registers you as both a securities agent and an investment adviser representative at the state level. That means you can sell securities for commissions and charge advisory fees for investment advice, the standard dual-registration setup at wirehouses and bank wealth platforms.
The Series 66 (with the Series 7) unlocks dual registration:
- Securities agent: transact securities business for clients of your broker-dealer, earning commissions
- Investment adviser representative (IAR): give investment advice and charge advisory fees through a registered investment adviser
That combination is the default at wirehouses, bank wealth-management platforms, and hybrid firms, where advisors run both brokerage and fee-based advisory business.
What the Series 66 does not do alone: without a Series 7, the dual registration never activates, and the 66 confers nothing by itself. And passing both exams still is not a license: each state has to approve your registration.
